An MLB analyst believes if the New York Yankees make a big trade before next month’s MLB trade deadline, it likely will be to add even more thump to their lineup. And Arizona Diamondbacks slugger Eugenio Suarez could be that addition.
“The Yankees’ title odds are looking good. To stay there: They need more pitching for sure, though the Yankees have done a great job of piecing things together so far. A more impactful pickup might come from a power bat for third base, with Arizona’s Eugenio Suarez leaping to mind as an ideal fit,” ESPN’s Bradford Doolittle wrote this week.

Heading into Wednesday night, hitting really hasn’t been a problem for the Yankees. The top club in the American League East is third in MLB in runs, runs batted in, and total bases. They are second in average, behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers. And there 107 home runs are the most in the league. Yet, third base has been an issue all season.

Eugenio Suarez stats (2025): .224 AVG, .298 OBP, .498 SLG, .796 OPS, 18 HR, 48 RBI, 40 R
The hope was that 2024 deadline addition Jazz Chisholm Jr. would slot in to be their second baseman all season. However, after a season-ending injury to Oswaldo Cabrera and mediocre play from greybeard DJ LeMahieu at third, the former Marlins All-Star has been moved back to the hot corner.
The 33-year-old Suarez is clearly in an age-based statistical decline and is an average defender. However, the 12-year veteran is a proven power bat. He has hit 30 or more homers five times during his career. Furthermore, if he doesn’t deliver for the Yanks in the second half, he comes off the books after this season. And they can try to address third again in the offseason.
If New York can’t make notable additions to bolster the staff for the stretch run, going with a lineup that bludgeons its way back to the World Series may be the plan. It worked for the Texas Rangers during their title run two seasons ago.
