The Milwaukee Brewers are preparing to make some moves before the start of the 2025 MLB season. They finished with a 93-69 record last season and won the National League Central for the second consecutive season.
General manager Matt Arnold will have some interesting decisions to make with the roster. One of the players who could potentially be traded this offseason is closer Devin Williams.
Bleacher Report Writer Zachary D. Rymer Creates 10 Different Mock Trades For Milwaukee Brewers Closer Devin Williams
Every year, many MLB teams are looking for relief pitching help. One of the top names on the trade market this offseason is Brewers closer Devin Williams. Bleacher Reporter writer Zachary D. Rymer created a mock trade in 10 different scenarios for him.
Ten of the teams he mentioned for Williams are the New York Mets, the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox, the Philadelphia Phillies, the San Diego Padres, the Toronto Blue Jays, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the San Francisco Giants, the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Texas Rangers. It would be interesting to see which of those teams was able to put together the best trade package for the star closer.
Mock Trade With the New York Mets
There is a chance that the Mets and the Brewers could put together another trade together this offseason. David Stearns used to work in Milwaukee’s front office and had success in his first season with New York. Zachary D. Rymer said
“Whenever a Brewer is on the trading block, I am contractually obligated to bring up the Mets as a possible destination.
The connection is unavoidable because of David Stearns. Before accepting his current gig as president of baseball operations with the Mets, he had a highly successful run in charge of Milwaukee’s front office.
In the here and now, the 39-year-old is looking at a bullpen depth chart that has been decimated by free agency. He should also want to add insurance for Díaz, who only occasionally looked like his old self in his return from knee surgery.”
Edwin Diaz is currently the New York Mets closer, but is it true that the Mets may never know what could happen with Diaz. He has dealt with some injuries over the last couple of years. The trade proposal Bleacher Report gives is the Brewers trading Devin Williams to the Mets for third baseman Brett Baty and infielder Luisangel Acuna (number 5 prospect for the Mets). Rymer also added:
“The Mets will need Baty if they don’t re-sign Pete Alonso, but he sure looks like a change-of-scenery trade chip in the meantime. For his part, it’s telling that Acuña didn’t start a single game in the playoffs. Whether a starting role awaits him in 2025 is unclear.
Still, the Brewers would be taking chances on both if they were to do this deal. Baty has a .607 OPS in 169 major league games, while Acuña generally gives off utility-guy vibes.”
New York most likely would not trade either Baty or Acuna. There is a chance that the New York Mets would rather move off of Jett Williams, Ronny Mauricio, or Jeff McNeil before trading Acuna and Baty. It will be interesting to see if the Milwaukee Brewers would trade with them or someone else. It might be bad business for the Milwaukee Brewers to not trade Devin Williams this offseason.
