Former Detroit Tigers left-handed pitcher Tyler Alexander is back in the AL Central after agreeing to a deal with the Chicago White Sox, the team announced on Sunday.

The Tigers’ second-round pick in 2015 was designated for assignment by the Milwaukee Brewers last week and elected free agency after clearing waivers.

Alexander, 30, will sign for the MLB minimum, one-year, $760,000 contract and immediately join the White Sox 40-man roster in the majors.

The Brewers were Alexander’s third MLB team following his five-year stint with the Tigers and one season with the Tampa Bay Rays.

After drafting Alexander out of TCU, he made his way up the Tigers’ affiliates before making his MLB debut in 2019, where he faced the White Sox. Alexander spent the better part of the next five years with Detroit.

He notably set an MLB record for a reliever striking out nine consecutive batters in a 2020 game against the Cincinnati Reds. Alexander fluctuated between starting and coming out of the bullpen during his tenure.

All said, Alexander made 120 appearances with 43 starts and struck out 273 batters in 341 1/3 innings while holding a 4.38 ERA.

In 2023, Alexander worked out of the bullpen 24 times before a lat strain sidelined him from early July through the end of the year. The Tigers DFA’d Alexander following the season.

The Rays claimed Alexander off waivers and he played in 23 games with nine starts and a 5.10 ERA for the club in 2024. Tampa Bay would non-tender Alexander after the season, making him a free agent.

After signing with the Brewers, Alexander made it through 21 games and four starts before getting DFA’d. He held a 6.19 ERA in 36 1/3 innings and a rough 9.24 ERA for May.

The White Sox are the worst team in the American League and have a bottom-10 pitching staff in the league. Getting a veteran pitcher like Alexander who can eat innings is a good fit for the time being.
