White Sox Reliever Exits Game With Knee Injury

The mood was upbeat in the White Sox locker room after a dominant 9-4 victory over the Mets, salvaging the final game of the series before a getaway day from Queens. The win not only prevented a sweep but also gave a boost to the struggling offense, which collected 12 hits on the afternoon. However, the win came at a cost.

White Sox reliever Miguel Castro injured his right knee in the ninth inning and was forced to leave the game.

The 30-year-old entered the game in the ninth inning as a light rain descended over Citi Field. Castro opened the inning by striking out Francisco Lindor before inducing a weak grounder from Juan Soto to the right side of the infield grass. First baseman Miguel Vargas fielded the grounder and tossed it to Castro as he ran to cover the bag. However, as Castro secured the inning’s second out, he appeared to jam his right foot, slip, and then fall.

The 6-foot-7 right-hander got up and walked gingerly for a few steps but later required assistance from a trainer to leave the field. After the game, he was seen in the clubhouse using crutches. He is scheduled for further testing on Thursday.

Castro, who pitched for the Mets from 2020-2021, received a pat on the back from his former teammate, Brandon Nimmo, as he was being helped off the field. Bryce Wilson was called on to replace Castro. He allowed an RBI double to Pete Alonso and a walk before punching out Mark Vientos to end the game.

The White Sox added Castro in a trade with the Astros on May 15th in exchange for cash considerations.  In two weeks with the team, he owns a 7.50 ERA across six games.

He began the season with Houston’s Triple-A affiliate after signing a minor league deal with the Astros this offseason. Castro performed well, posting a 2.29 ERA over 19 innings. The White Sox front office took a flier on him, hoping to bolster a struggling bullpen that has blown the most leads in Major League Baseball this season.
