Red Sox Depth Arm Returns From Injury; Is Recall In Cards?

The Red Sox have been burning through arms over the last several weeks, but they might be able to weather the storm before things get any worse.

Zach Penrod, who has missed the entire season with a left elbow sprain, was activated off the injured list and optioned to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. Chris Murphy, who underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2024, was transferred to High-A Greenville to begin a rehab assignment, according to The Boston Globe’s Alex Speier.

What does that mean?

Boston has a few depth options to work with as we approach the dog days of what has been a disappointing season to this point.

Penrod was signed out of independent ball and debuted last September, allowing just two runs (one earned) in four innings over seven appearances (2.25 ERA). The Red Sox seemed to have him on their radar as a potential surprise addition to the bullpen during spring training, but his injury ended any chance of that coming to fruition. Boston just might not have much of a choice over the next few weeks, as three or four solid appearances could be enough for the left-hander to be called up to the show.

Murphy, on the other hand, will need some time before he is seriously considered for a role — likely returning to full form at some point in August or September.

Penrod will start for the WooSox on Wednesday, so we might not have to wait long for another transaction to be made.
