But all signs indicate that Boston will call up top prospect Marcelo Mayer from Triple-A after manager Alex Cora revealed the injury to Alex Bregman will likely land the third baseman on the injured list.
While plenty of concern remains around the severity of Bregman’s injury, there is still room for Mayer supporters and Red Sox fans to celebrate the No. 2 prospect’s promotion to the big league — including his teammate Roman Anthony.
Anthony posted his elation on his personal Instagram story.
“About time,” Anthony wrote across a picture of himself and Mayer with a red heart emoji. “Go be you brother.”

Before the 22-year-old infielder left to make the 44-mile drive from Polar Park to Fenway Park, Mayer received plenty of handshakes and hugs from his Triple-A Worcester teammates.
As Mayer left Chad Tracy’s office, the entire clubhouse went “bananas,” per Telegram & Gazette’s Tommy Cassell.
“The reaction was complete happiness for him from his teammates,” the WooSox manager said, per Cassell.

Mayer is hitting .271/.347/.471 at Triple-A, with nine home runs, 43 RBI and 31 runs scored.
