White Sox Shocking Roster Move Sends Five-Year Starter To AAA

The White Sox have one of the worst records in major league baseball this year and are likely to finish with 100+ losses. While it does seem that the team is more competitive in these games, the record does not reflect it at this point.

One of the reasons why the White Sox record is so bad is in part due to some of the “bigger name” players struggling. One of those players is Luis Robert Jr., who is having a tough 2 months to start the season. However, another player has been significantly worse this season, that being Andrew Vaughn.

According to FanGraphs, Andrew Vaughn has the lowest amount of WAR in the major leagues this season with -1.3. This is .3 worse than the next closest person, which shows how bad Vaughn has been this season.

It’s not just the advanced stats that are hurting Vaughn, as the conventional stats aren’t looking good either. To date, Vaughn is hitting just .189 with five homeruns and 19 RBIs. To make matters worse, his OBP is only .218. So not only is he not hitting, he hasn’t been getting on base either.

Many people figured the White Sox would stick with Vaughn through the rest of the season to see if he can improve his value enough to convince a team to take him in a trade or just ride out another 100+ loss season. However, the White Sox just shocked the world, as they made a move nobody saw coming.

According to the White Sox, they have sent Andrew Vaughn down to AAA Charlotte.

This is a shocking move, as people figured that we would be stuck with Vaughn for the rest of the season. Chris Getz is proving everyone wrong, as he is going to let Vaughn figure some things out in AAA, as what he is doing in Chicago clearly isn’t working.

The timing of this move is a bit odd, as the White Sox also sent down first basemen Tim Elko, leaving no “official” first basemen on the roster. This likely means that Miguel Vargas will man first base for the time being, or the White Sox will plan to carry three catchers on the roster with Korey Lee due back any day.

While completely shocking, this move was long overdue. Vaughn has been struggling all season and he needs to figure it out. Despite this move being long overdue, I like Getz showing this team that you must perform to keep your spot, even if you have been on the roster for the last few years.

It is likely that we will see Vaughn sometime in a few weeks if he can figure out and fix some things with the Knights. If he can, hopefully he can regain some trade value before the deadline and convince a team to trade for him, as it is likely that he is not in the White Sox future plans.
