UDPATE: Cowboys stole immediate swing tackle candidate in 2025 NFL Draft

Ohio State v Oregon

The Dallas Cowboys have been on the hunt for a swing tackle all offseason, but have yet to find one. Chuma Edoga filled in admirably over the last several seasons, but he left for Jacksonville this offseason via free agency.

And with a lot of uncertainty at offensive tackle going into the year, it’s vital that the Cowboys figure out this spot.

In a recent article by Thomas Valentine of Pro Football Focus, he wrote about the 2025 draft class by the Dallas Cowboys and praised the group overall. One player that impressed Valentine was Ajani Cornelius, an offensive tackle from Oregon.

Cowboys sixth round pick Ajani Cornelius could be Dallas’ swing tackle

Here is what Valentine had to say about the sixth-round pick by Dallas this April:

“Cornelius logged more snaps than any player in Dallas’ draft class, finishing with 3,297 across five seasons — three at Rhode Island and two at Oregon. A career right tackle, Cornelius stayed consistent across both programs and earned a 74.2 grade in 2024.”

The Cowboys have an excess of quality guards with Brock Hoffman, Robert Jones, and T.J. Bass all fighting for a spot behind the starters.

However, one thing they lack is quality offensive tackle depth. Dallas is hopeful that Asim Richards could develop into their eventual swing tackle, but it’s unclear how the new coaching staff feels about him in their gap-heavy scheme.

That could open up a spot for Cornelius, who is highly experienced coming out of college, but only has experience at right tackle.

Dallas would love to have a swing tackle who has experience playing both spots, but that might be too big of an ask from Cornelius during his rookie season.

The hope is that Cornelius can be the backup right tackle behind Steele and then Tyler Smith could potentially move out to left tackle in a pinch, if needed. That means Brock Hoffman or Robert Jones would likely slide into left guard, which wouldn’t be an issue.

Keep an eye on Cornelius throughout the preseason as he has a lot of similarities to Steele coming out of Texas Tech.

Both players had a ton of college experience and that allowed Steele to get on the field as a rookie.

While the Cowboys are certainly hoping that Cornelius never has to play this season, they want to have a viable option behind Steele and Guyton. Here is to hoping that player is Ajani Cornelius.
