Cody Bellinger grand slam in Juan Soto’s face is perfect response to Pete Alonso miss

Oh no, not the short porch!! Here come the whiners!! Cody Bellinger’s eighth-inning grand slam against the Mets gave the Yankees an 8-2 lead (and win) on Sunday Night Baseball, breaking the game open after Anthony Volpe and Aaron Judge refused to do so. And Juan Soto got to watch it sail a few feet over his head while Bronx Bombers fans probably laughed at him as it landed in the first couple rows.

It was all made possible by the Mets’ bullpen and first baseman Pete Alonso. Ryne Stanek and Genesis Cabrera weren’t effective in their appearances, but had Alonso not airmailed a throw to home plate, perhaps the game wouldn’t have gotten out of hand.

After a Jasson Dominguez walk and Austin Wells double, the Yankees had runners on second and third with one out in the bottom of the eighth. Jorbit Vivas then staged an impressive at-bat against Stanek, and he battled before ripping a grounder to Alonso, who was playing shallow to make an attempt to get the runner at home.

Alonso fielded the ball cleanly and would’ve had Dominguez by a mile at the plate, but his throw couldn’t have been more off the mark. Dominguez scored, Wells moved to third, and Paul Goldschmidt came to the plate.

Yankees win first Subway Series of 2025 thanks to Cody Bellinger’s grand slam

Goldschmidt jumped on a fastball from Stanek to drive in another run to make it 4-2. It was an impressive at-bat that is already being overlooked because of what Bellinger was able to do.

In between, Judge had the chance to come through with the bases loaded after Trent Grisham walked, but he waved at a bunch of balls to strike out in what was another lackluster at-bat in high-leverage. Thankfully, his teammate had his back.

Bellinger hopped on a first-pitch 97 MPH fastball from Cabrera and got under it enough to seal the Yankees’ Subway Series victory. What a moment. What a weekend.

Soto made the last out of the Yankees’ Friday night win, and then got to watch the ending unfold up close and personal Sunday evening. That was just about the best possible response the Yankees could’ve had in their first matchup vs the Mets after Soto’s big offseason decision.

Before we dive into more specifics on Monday, enjoy this one, Yankees fans. There probably wasn’t a much better way to close out the weekend.
