Cubs Rookie Moises Ballesteros Literally Swung Out of His Shoes

Moisés Ballesteros loses cleat on first career RBI

You know, we can laugh about it now and I’m sure his teammates were cracking jokes, but watching Moises Ballesteros stumble out of the batter’s box did concern me at first during Friday’s Cubs’ game against the White Sox. But hey, it turns out that the Cubs rookie literally swung out of his shoes, well at least one of them, in what ended up being Ballesteros’ first career RBI in the major leagues.

Ballesteros was called up earlier this week and made his MLB debut against the Marlins. The 21-year-old went 0-for-4 on Tuesday, grounding out all four times. On Friday, he came up to the plate with runners at second and third with one out. The White Sox were playing the infield in and there was a play at the plate after Ballesteros bounced a chopper to Andrew Vaughn.

At first glance it appeared as though Ballesteros might have tripped, but his left shoe dug into the dirt and he had no choice but to leave it behind and run to first base.

Definitely something he’ll remember when he looks back at his first RBI with the Cubs.

Ballesteros also collected his first MLB hit in the Cubs’ 13-3 win on Friday. The left-handed hitter lined a single over the White Sox second baseman in the eighth inning to drive in his second run of the game.

After his debut on Tuesday and the fielder’s choice to begin the game on Friday, it was good to see Ballesteros make quality contact against the White Sox. Ballesteros had exit velocities of 93.4mph, 99.3mph and 107.5mph.

Nice, easy win for the Cubs and a solid day for the 21-year-old rookie, who had family in attendance at Wrigley Field.
