5 trade targets to fill Red Sox’s vacancy at first base after Triston Casas’ injury

Triston Casas’ season-ending knee injury is a huge loss for the Boston Red Sox. With superstar Rafael Devers being adamant about not switching to first, it could be time for Craig Breslow and Co. to look towards the trade market. If they choose to take this avenue, here are five potential trade targets for the Red Sox.

First on our list is Alec Bohm. Bohm, who’s been struggling for the Phillies in 2025, has been the subject of several trade rumors dating back to the offseason. If the Phillies decide to move on, Boston could be a suitable partner as Bohm, a primary third baseman, can play first, having played multiple major league games there.

An All-Star in 2024, Bohm hit 15 homers with an OPS+ and wRC+ of 115. A change of scenery could do him well, and if he can return to his prior form, he would help the Red Sox immensely.

The second potential trade target for the Red Sox is Justin Turner. Now a member of the Chicago Cubs, Turner is an old friend, having spent his 2023 season in Boston. Unfortunately for him, 2025 has not been kind, as he currently owns an ugly 23 OPS+ and 36 wRC+ in 22 games.

Despite his bad start, a reunion with Turner would make sense, as the team was interested in bringing him back to Boston for 2025. The 40-year-old veteran would bring a lot of value to the team, as in addition to playing a good first base, Turner also has the experience and winning pedigree to help a team looking to return to the postseason.

For Turner, a trade to Boston could provide him with a much-needed change in scenery. In his lone season for the Red Sox, Turner smashed 23 homers to match his 114 OPS+ and 115 wRC+.

5 trade options for the Red Sox to fill their vacancy at first base in the wake of Triston Casas’ injury

Third on our list is Mark Canha of the Kansas City Royals. Having come to the Royals via trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, Canha has played sparingly to open up 2025, appearing in just 17 games.

Like Turner, a trade for Canha would bring both a good glove at first and a veteran presence in the Red Sox clubhouse. Despite his limited playtime, Canha has put together a solid start to his 2025 campaign, putting up a line of .294/.375/.353 with a .728 in addition to his 108 OPS+.

While not a big-ticket move, Canha would be a good pickup for Boston. He has several productive seasons in his long Major League career and would plug a much-needed hole at first base.

Coming in at fourth is Washington Nationals slugger Nathaniel Lowe. Easily the flashiest name on this list, Lowe has established himself as a formidable player on both sides of the ball, having won both a Silver Slugger and a Gold Glove in his tenure as first baseman for the Texas Rangers.

Having been traded to the Nationals in the offseason, Lowe has gotten off to a great start in 2025, launching six home runs and driving in 28 in tandem with his impressive 120 OPS+ and 118 wRC+.

While demanding a decent return, Lowe would be an excellent acquisition for Boston. With two more seasons of control, his offensive productivity would keep him in the lineup when Casas eventually returns in 2026.

Last but certainly not least of Boston’s potential trade options is Ryan O’Hearn of the Baltimore Orioles. After an underwhelming 2024, O’Hearn has gotten off to a monster start. In 28 games for Baltimore, O’Hearn has slashed .305/.383/.568/.952 with seven homers and a 174 wRC+.

While a trade for O’Hearn seems unlikely on the outside, if the Orioles continue to struggle and become sellers, he could become an exciting option for the Red Sox.
