Report: Packers to sign star Canadian QB Taylor Elgersma to roster

Dave Naylor of TSN in Canada is reporting that the Green Bay Packers will be signing USports quarterback Taylor Elgersma after a successful rookie minicamp tryout with the team last week.

Elgersma was scheduled to attend the Buffalo Bills’ rookie minicamp as a tryout player, which begins on Friday, so the timing of this move is to ensure that he doesn’t end up signing with the Bills.

Elgersma has long been a target of the Packers, as they brought him in on 1 of their 30 pre-draft visits this offseason.

For what it’s worth, Elgersma was the only quarterback they brought into Green Bay, and he was just one of four undrafted players who visited the Packers.

From a pure talent perspective, Elgersma was ranked as the second-best player available to teams in the Canadian Football League’s 2025 draft class — only behind Stanford receiver Elic Ayomanor, who was taken in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

He was eventually taken in the second round of the CFL draft by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, likely slipping due to his NFL prospects.

For perspective, Ayomanor went undrafted in the eight-round draft, and Kurtis Rourke, who was drafted by the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers in the seventh round, was taken one round after Elgersma in the CFL draft.

While at Wilfrid Laurier, Elgersma won the equivalent of Canada’s Heisman Trophy Award in the Hec Crighton Trophy.

APC’s own Dusty Evely wrote a full scouting report on Elgersma, just the second USports prospect to earn a Senior Bowl visit, last month.

Despite his talented arm strength, it seems unlikely that Elgersma would push Malik Willis for Jordan Love’s primary backup in 2025.

Instead, Elgersma is probably going to compete with former fifth-round pick Sean Clifford for the team’s practice squad role this fall.

The Packers cleared a roster spot earlier this week with the release of receiver Tulu Griffin, so they do not need to make a corresponding roster move to sign Elgersma to the 91-man roster.
