Jerod Mayo Offers Peculiar Reason Patriots Didn’t Make Deadline Moves

The Patriots didn’t make a trade before the deadline Tuesday, leaving Jerod Mayo to pick up the pieces.

New England’s only significant move during NFL trade deadline season was shipping Joshua Uche to the Kansas City Chiefs for a 2026 sixth-round pick. The Patriots were involved in multiple rumors but ultimately didn’t get anything done.

“The one thing about the trade deadline — I talked about this on Monday — at least in the NFL, people talk about it like it’s baseball or basketball, it’s not,” Mayo told reporters, per a team-provided video. “We do our research on everything that is available. I would say Eliot and his staff have contacted multiple teams, and multiple teams have contacted us, just like every other team.”

New England had an opportunity to appease its frustrated players like K.J. Osborn and trade them to other teams. As for why that didn’t happen Tuesday, Mayo offered an odd answer.

“Not sure,” Mayo said. “I mean, look, for us, it’s about value. It’s about thinking about the present and also trying to get better in the future.”

The Patriots were criticized for not getting back the perceived value Uche could have given them. Also, except for the Dallas Cowboys’ trade for Jonathan Mingo, it didn’t seem like the market was interested in handing out premium draft picks. Beggers can’t be choosers not getting something back for players who aren’t long-term assets could bite New England back.
