Tommy Edman is the ‘Steal of the Century’: How Dodgers Fleeced the Cardinals, White Sox

The Los Angeles Dodgers hit the jackpot when they traded for Tommy Edman at the 2024 deadline.

Edman played a pivotal role in the Dodgers’ World Series victory, as he was named the NL Championship Series Most Valuable Player. He is still exceeding expectations this season as the Dodgers’ starting second baseman.

The Dodgers acquired Edman in a three-team trade involving the Chicago White Sox and St. Louis Cardinals. Los Angeles traded infielder Miguel Vargas, shortstop Alexander Albertus, and shortstop Jeral Perez to the White Sox.

The deal gave the Dodgers right-handed reliever Michael Kopech from Chicago and Edman from St. Louis.

A trade with the Cardinals is surprising because the team is a major NL rival of the Dodgers. St. Louis received outfielder Tommy Pham, right-handed starting pitcher Erick Fedde, and cash considerations from the White Sox.

And nothing from the Dodgers.

“They gave up a bucket of baseballs, a better parking space and a half in bag of Doritos, and a Subway gift card for an All Star,” Dodgers Nation’s Doug McKain said about the Cardinals trading Edman.

The Cardinals went on to designate Pham for assignment a month after the trade deadline. Pham finished the season with the Kansas City Royals and then signed as a free agent with the Pittsburgh Pirates this offseason.

Edman did not make an MLB appearance with the Cardinals in 2024, as he recovered from a right wrist sprain.

But soon after he joined the Dodgers, Edman became a standout player in MLB. Edman slashed .328/.354/.508 in 16 postseason games to help push Los Angeles to a World Series title.

In Game 6 of the NLCS, Edman hit a two-run double to give the Dodgers a two-run lead in the first inning. Then, Edman hit a two-run homer to secure the Dodgers’ spot in the World Series.

From there, Edman has shined for Los Angeles. This season, he is slashing .261/.298/.545 and has hit eight home runs and 16 RBIs through the first 26 games of the season.

The Dodgers gave Edman a five-year, $74 million contract extension this offseason, so he will be a key player for Los Angeles for years to come.
