The San Francisco 49ers draft Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke adding the former Hoosier to a loaded QB Room

The San Fransisco 49ers selected former Indiana quarterback Kurtis Rourke with No. 227 pick in 2025 NFL Draft paring Rourke with his former Indiana teammate CJ West who was selected earlier in round four.

The San Fransisco 49ers now have a quarterback room that features Brock Purdy, Mac Jones, Tanner Mordecai and now Kurtis Rourke.

Rourke might have an opportunity to compete for a roster spot as a rookie but as he continues physical therapy after undergoing surgery in January to repair his right ACL he could be moved to the practice squad or “PUP” injury reserve list. Rourke did not take part in pre-draft workouts.

For Rourke, it feels like a perfect fit.

“I love the situation,” Rourke told local Bay Area reporters shortly after being drafted. “I mean, the offense is so dynamic. I think it has a lot of similarities to last year in Indiana, in the way they move the ball and the different types of ways to attack the defenses.

“And obviously, Coach (Kyle) Shanahan has developed a great offense, and I’m excited to be a part of it.”

B/R’ Bleacher Report NFL Scout Dame Parson on Kurtis Rourke:

Kurtis Rourke is a pure pocket passer who thrives on timing and accuracy inside clean pockets. He offers a serviceable floor. He does not the developmental upside to bank on. He projects as a high-quality backup QB with starter upside in the right situation.

Previous to his only season at Indiana he spent four seasons at Ohio appearing in 46 games, (with a 30-14 record in games he’s started). He threw for 10,144 career passing yards, 71 touchdowns and 20 interceptions.

Rourke started 12 games for the Hoosiers in 2024 leading Indiana to their first ever College Football Playoff appearance. The Canadian signal caller recorded 3,042 passing yards, 29 touchdowns and five interceptions, with a career-high 69.4 completion percentage which led him to finish ninth overall in Heisman Trophy voting.

Kurtis Rourke, 24 is expected to be a full participant for the start of training camp.
