The Atlanta Braves have struggled a bit with pitching depth this season, especially after Reynaldo López landed on the injured list with a hurt shoulder. Atlanta’s depth was boosted when Spencer Strider returned from elbow surgery, but Strider made just one start before landing back on the IL with a strained hamstring. The Braves can’t afford to fall any further behind in the National League, or they’re going to run the risk of falling short of the postseason in October.
This could open Atlanta up to a blockbuster trade for a pitcher in the coming weeks. The perfect low-risk solution is St. Louis Cardinals veteran pitcher Erick Fedde. Fedde would be a key piece of the Braves’ rotation for the entire season if Atlanta acquired him. The veteran righty has been consistently good since he cracked into the big leagues again last season. He holds a 3.33 ERA in five starts and 27 innings this season. Fedde had a solid start against the Braves this week.
The Braves could ship off one or two top-15 prospects to bring Fedde in for the postseason push. The veteran’s contract expires at the end of the season, and his deal is relatively affordable, so this would work quite well for Atlanta.
There’s next to no reason for the Cardinals to hold onto him this season because he’s unlikely to return to the team next year. A trade could quickly come to fruition once St. Louis begins shopping him, and the Braves make a lot of sense as a suitor.
