As the 2025 NFL season approaches, the 49ers are in a contract standoff with tight end George Kittle.
Kittle is one of, if not the best player on the 49ers roster, and has been a member of the team for the last eight years.
He has one year left on his deal, but it appears that the two sides aren’t close to agreeing on a new contract.
Outside of Travis Kelce, Kittle is the best tight end in the NFL and one of the best of all time.
Because of that, he is seeking a pay raise from his current deal.
Kittle is making $15 million per season after signing a five-year, $75 million deal after the 2020 season.
He is expect to request $20 million per season on his next contract with the 49ers.
Kittle is entering his age-32 season, so he has plenty of time left in his prime.
However, the 49ers don’t appear to be budging on his contract demands.
The contract talks have spilled over into team training now, as Kittle has skipped some of the first workouts of the season.

San Francisco’s voluntary offseason workout program started on Tuesday, but Kittle was nowhere to be found.
The team wants Kittle to be a 49er for life, but that dream might not become reality if a deal can’t be made.
“We want George to retire a Niner. He’s one of those guys,” general manager John Lynch said.
“He’s a Niner through and through.”
Kittle has also said himself that he wants to remain a 49er for the rest of his career.

While Kittle is holding out during his contract negotiations, quarterback Brock Purdy is still showing up.
The 2025 season will also be the last year of Purdy’s contract, and he is seeking an extension to be the 49ers’ franchise quarterback.
Despite his current contract situation, Purdy has been seen at 49ers offseason workouts.
Currently, the 49ers have just over $39 million in cap space, according to Spotrac.
That is not enough money to give extensions to both Kittle and Purdy.
