$38 Million Red Sox Pitcher Sends Strong Message to Front Office

The Boston Red Sox are dealing with their fair share of injuries to the starting rotation in the first few weeks of the regular season. Brayan Bello will make his season debut on Tuesday after a right shoulder strain placed him on the 15-day injured list during spring training. Richard Fitts is on the IL with a pectoral strain, and Kutter Crawford is sidelined with right patellar tendinopathy.

Lucas Giolito began the season on the injured list after suffering a left hamstring strain on the first pitch he threw in spring training. Giolito has made two rehab starts at Double-A Portland and two starts at Triple-A Worcester. The 30-year-old threw five innings for Double-A Portland on Sunday, allowing three runs on six hits with four strikeouts.

Giolito, who signed a two-year, $38.5 million contract with the Red Sox during the 2023 offseason but missed the 2024 season because of a Ulnar Collateral Ligament surgery with an internal brace repair, feels ready to make his Red Sox debut after a long wait. “I feel ready to go,” Giolito told Masslive’s Chris Cotillo. “Finally hitting the five-inning mark was good, so I feel ready to help contribute in whatever way possible.”

Giolito threw 47 of his 65 pitches in Sunday’s start for strikes. Manager Alex Cora told Cotillo that the Red Sox haven’t decided whether Giolito will make another rehab start or join the MLB club. “We’ll meet,” Cora told Cotillo. “I just talked to him [Giolito] a little bit. Felt great, threw strikes, and physically, he’s in a good spot. We’ll see what’s next for him, whether it’s one more or he’ll be back with us.”

Giolito finished sixth in the American League Cy Young voting in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox and seventh in 2020. In 2023, he led the AL with 33 starts and 41 home runs allowed.
