The San Francisco 49ers are in a state of flux with their starting quarterback. Brock Purdy, despite his 23-13 record as a starter, struggled mightily last season and isn’t close to the kind of long-term deal he has been searching for over the last couple of years. If the 49ers are looking to move on from Purdy – or at least not give him the kind of long-term money that many other signal-callers have required – there is one other option. Aaron Rodgers.
The four-time NFL MVP and the 49ers have plenty of history. The quarterback was passed over by the 49ers for the first overall pick in 2005, and Rodgers vowed vengeance ever since. Now that the 41-year-old is out of a job, and isn’t looking for a lot of money to play, it could open the door to a potential agreement.
“I told every single one of the teams, it’s not about the money … I’ll play for [$10 million], I don’t care,” Rodgers said on the Pat McAfee show Thursday. “I’m in a different phase of my life. I’m 41 years old. I’m in a serious relationship. … To make a commitment to a team is a big thing, whether you’re a first-year player or a 20-year vet. I had a lot of great conversations with a lot of teams.”
It’s highly unlikely that the 49ers would want to move on from a young player like Purdy for Rodgers at this point. The future Hall-of-Famer has burned too many bridges over his career. But budget-wise? This would be a solution. Don’t pay Purdy $50 million and get Rodgers to play back in his home area of the Bay Area for $10 million. … If you believe Rodgers would really do that.
