Video Shows What Patrick Mahomes Said Before Game-Winning Touchdown

On Monday night the Kansas City Chiefs took down the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by a final score of 30-24 thanks to a game-winning touchdown run from running back Kareem Hunt. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for the Chiefs, though, as quarterback Patrick Mahomes suffered an ankle injury during the game. He admitted to feeling a bit scared after rolling his ankle on a Samaje Perine touchdown play.

I was obviously running for the goal line and was kind of committed to running the football and at the last second [passed to] Samaje, and so I kind of awkwardly rolled the ankle a little bit,” Mahomes said. “You feel the pain, and that scares you. I’ve dealt with ankles before, but I just kind of laid there, and as time went on, the pain subsided. I just kind of got back to it and got back moving again and felt comfortable going out there.” Mahomes battled back and helped his team pull out the overtime victory. After taking some time to review the footage from the game, NFL Films replayed the final moments before Hunt’s game-winning touchdown.

As it turns out, Mahomes made the call. “Run it…give him the ball.” @PatrickMahomes knew exactly how he wanted to close it out pic.twitter.com/T4n317OhEw — NFL Films (@NFLFilms) November 5, 2024 “I see it. Run it. Give him the ball. Now! Third down, run it!” Mahomes yelled to the coaching staff before the play was called.

He then motioned for Hunt to line up in a specific place before the ball was snapped. “Hey, right here. Right here, right here.” Mahomes’ insistence that the Chiefs run the ball paid off as Hunt crossed the goal line for the win, moving the team to 8-0 on the season.

Up next for Mahomes and company is a divisional showdown with the Denver Broncos.
