According to Major League Baseball’s transactions log, the Baltimore Orioles have signed catcher Chadwick Tromp to a minor league deal.
Tromp began his professional career in the Cincinnati Reds organization in 2013 and made his big league debut with the San Francisco Giants in July of 2020. The Atlanta Braves claimed him off of waivers from the Giants in September 2021, and he made appearances for Atlanta each year from 2022-25.
Tromp doesn’t have a huge sample size in his five years of MLB experience. The Aruba native has played in just 61 games from 2020-2025.
In those 61 games between San Fran and Atlanta, Tromp has slashed .224/.235/.385 with a .619 OPS. He has compiled 35 hits, 10 doubles, five home runs and has knocked in 22 RBIs. The 30-year-old has been sent to Triple-A Norfolk.
Tromp elected free agency last week after he was designated for assignment by the Braves and offers a more experienced third option in the organization than David Bañuelos.
Having Tromp around will also reduce any pressure the Orioles might feel to promote top catching prospect Samuel Basallo in the event of an early-season injury to Adley Rutschman or Gary Sánchez.
The Orioles also made a few other minor league transactions. Right-hander Dylan Heid was called up to Triple-A Norfolk from Chesapeake, and O’s No. 19 prospect, right-hander Brandon Young, was sent to Aberdeen’s roster. This move was likely made for a potential MLB debut soon.
