There’s a scenario where the Boston Red Sox could lose Alex Bregman next winter if the right-handed slugger opts out of his deal. If that happens, the Red Sox will have a few tough decisions on their plate. One might suggest that the Red Sox could make Rafael Devers their long-term third baseman, but that doesn’t seem to be the plan.
If it isn’t, the Red Sox could get creative and look at somebody like Bo Bichette of the Toronto Blue Jays. After the Blue Jays signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to a long-term extension, the wise thing to do would be to keep Bichette in that town. However, that doesn’t look likely, and with him hitting free agency next winter, he looks poised to get paid. In a recent prediction from Steve Adams of MLB Trade Rumors, he had the infielder landing north of $200 million, a deal the Red Sox might be content handing out, given his age.
“If Bichette’s early positive signs at the plate ultimately yield a rebound to his prior form, that age and production from a shortstop-capable middle infielder will likely push him north of $200MM.
“Even if he has only a partial rebound at the plate, his age, position and offensive upside should land him in the $140-175MM range we saw with other shortstops on the right side of 30 (Javier Baez, Trevor Story, Dansby Swanson),” he wrote. If one thing has been true throughout the Blue Jays star’s career, it’s his ability to swing the bat at a high level. Bichette led the league in hits in 2021 and 2022, and currently leads in 2025 with 22. A career 119 OPS+ hitter and only 27 years old, there’s reason to believe the Red Sox could be interested in a potential deal of Bregman walks.
