After interviewing for the Dallas Cowboys’ running backs coach position, Oregon assistant Ra’Shaad Samples has chosen to remain in Eugene. When asked Tuesday about his decision, Samples offered a succinct explanation: “My heart is at Oregon,” Samples said. Samples, a Dallas native and former assistant head coach at SMU, had been considered a strong candidate for the Cowboys’ vacancy under new head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
Ultimately, Dallas hired Derrick Foster, who previously coached running backs for the New Orleans Saints and Los Angeles Chargers, where he worked with standout players such as Alvin Kamara and Austin Ekeler. Samples’ decision to stay is significant for Oregon. In 2024, he helped guide running backs Jordan James and Noah Whittington to a combined 1,807 rushing yards and 21 total touchdowns, contributing to the Ducks’ Big Ten Championship during their first season in the conference.
In 2025, Samples will be dealing with a new weapon in Tulane transfer Makhi Hughes. Hughes racked up 1,401 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground last season, making him an exciting addition to the Ducks’ already explosive offense. Fans will likely see Samples and Hughes in action at the 2025 Oregon Spring Game on Saturday, April 26. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. PST.
