Earlier this week, I proposed a hypothetical trade between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Atlanta Braves that would help the Braves turn around their horrendous start to the season. The deal would send former top prospects James Outman and Bobby Miller to the Braves for a loaded return. Here’s the full deal I proposed:
Braves receive: OF James Outman, RHP Bobby Miller Dodgers receive: RHP Owen Murphy, RHP Garrett Baumann, SS Jose Perdomo In this deal, the Braves would be taking a huge risk on two former top prospects who have struggled to earn playing time in Los Angeles. The Dodgers have too much pitching talent to ever need Miller again. Miller sits behind at least eight pitchers in the Dodgers’ organization, so trading him wouldn’t be the end of the world.
Outman is in a very similar boat. There just isn’t a place for him in the Dodgers’ lineup. But both of these stars could come to Atlanta and make an immediate impact.
As for the prospect return, it would take quite a haul to steal these two stars from the Dodgers. Owen Murphy is a very talented pitching prospect who has top-of-the-rotation potential if everything pans out the way it should. He’s been excellent in his minor league career, and he’s off to a hot start this season.
Garrett Baumann is also a very talented pitching prospect who’s on the same path to the big leagues as Murphy. Baumann was dominant last season and could be fast-tracked to the big leagues in the next two years if he continues to dominate. Jose Perdomo is a very high-potential infield prospect. He hasn’t played past rookie ball yet, so it’s hard to determine his true value, but he has all the raw tools to be successful.
The Dodgers would make this deal if they’re confident in their big league roster and want to improve the farm system. The Braves could use both the talented prospects in the return.
