The SF Giants have had a very good start to the 2025 season. This comes despite the fact that shortstop Willy Adames, their biggest offseason acquisition, has not done much at the plate so far. That may be changing though.

In Monday’s series opener against the Philadelphia Phillies, Adames hit a solo home run to the opposite field in Citizen Bank Park. It was an impressive swing of the bat and it was the first regular season home run he has hit as a Giant. We saw him hit some in spring training, but he has now showed off his power in a game that counts for San Francisco.

Even though Adames has not gotten off to a red-hot start at the plate, he has still contributed in other ways. His defense has been very impressive and he has still set the tone as an endlessly positive leader for the team.

The 29-year-old veteran has already had a signature moment in a Giants uniform. His memorable and unique walk-off hit in the team’s home opener was clutch and kept the good vibes rolling after the team’s phenomenal road trip to begin the season.

Adames has never been a guy with a high batting average, but he has always had some pop in his bat. Last season he hit 32 home runs as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers, so the Giants were hoping they were getting a guy who could give the team at least 20-something homers over the course of a season.

It took him 16 games to get his first regular season homer as a Giant, but maybe getting his first will open the floodgates to a certain extent. It would be understandable if Adames was pressing a little bit at the plate to begin the year after signing the largest contract in franchise history in the offseason. Every player wants to prove they are worth a big contract when they sign with a new team so maybe Adames can settle down a little bit and start doing what he normally does.

The fact that the team has still played very well without their major offensive addition this offseason completely carrying the team gives one hope that the team can be even better once they get Adames going at the plate. His first homer for the Giants may be a good sign that he is starting to get going with the bat.
