Heading into this season, there were two major superstars entering the final years of their respective contracts: Kyle Tucker of the Chicago Cubs and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays. Surprisingly, the Blue Jays were able to ink Guerrero to a massive 14-year, $500 million contract extension. This deal directly impacts the market for Tucker, and it has many around baseball suggesting the Cubs superstar is going to be the next one to sign a megadeal.
Since this deal is set to have some serious implications on Tucker’s future in baseball, he was recently asked about it. “I’m sure (Guerrero) loves playing in Toronto and everything,” Tucker said, via Bob Nightengale of USA Today. “So that’s great for him. But everyone’s a little different. Right now, I’m here to play this year and play for the Cubs. So I’m excited to get out there and play, just kind of see where everything goes after that.”
While Guerrero might have signed a midseason extension, it’s unlikely Tucker follows suit. Tucker is likely to be the most valuable asset on the market next winter. Signing an extension with the Cubs before teams like the New York Yankees, New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, and others get the chance to bid on him would be a monumental mistake.
Tucker’s attention appears to be on baseball, and it’s pretty clear in his play. He’s performed like one of the best hitters in baseball. The superstar outfielder could be increasing his value by the day if he continues to post numbers like he is right now. It would be foolish to follow in Guerrero’s footsteps and sign an extension.
