Cubs Must Trade for Ace Sandy Alcantara After Justin Steele Injury

The time for the Chicago Cubs to make a move in the pitching department is now. After losing Justin Steele to injury, the Cubs have a huge gap at the top of the rotation. Steele was reportedly viewed by many as the ace of the staff — even over Shota Imanaga and Matthew Boyd.

Now, the Cubs must go out and bring in Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara. Alcántara has made three starts so far in 2024 and averaging just over five innings per start. He’s recorded a 4.70 ERA with 12 strike outs and eight walks. His ERA ballooned as a result of conceding four earned runs against the Nationals on Saturday, but his first two starts were promising after returning from Tommy John surgery.

The Marlins have mentioned numerous times that they have no interest in trading Alcántara, but everyone in baseball knows they won’t pass up an offer they think would better the organization. Currently, Alcántara is under contract through next season with a club option in 2027. What could a trade package look like as a result?

The Marlins are going to want multiple, high-rated prospects from the Cubs. Matt Shaw is almost untouchable, so you would expect the conversation to start with RHP Cade Horton (Cubs No. 2 prospect). Given the club option exists, the Marlins will likely push for more such as RHP Brandon Birdsell (Cubs No. 8 prospect). One thing for certain is the Cubs won’t get Alcántara without coughing up a considerable amount. However, it’s a move the Cubs need to make if they want to compete with the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets in October.
