Yankees’ $162 Million Bust Ties Unwanted Franchise Record

After starting the season with a dominant three-game sweep over the Milwaukee Brewers, the New York Yankees have since struggled. They have gone 5-7 in their last 12 games and have lost back-to-back series against the Detroit Tigers and then the San Francisco Giants. Yankees pitcher Carlos Rodon is among the team’s struggling players, as things have not gone well for him early on. At the time of this writing, he sports a 1-3 record and 5.48 ERA in four appearances this campaign. This includes allowing nine runs in his last two starts alone.

Rodon’s struggles this season have now played a factor in him tying an unwanted franchise record. Rodon has now allowed 51 home runs in his Yankees tenure, which ties him with JA Happ for the most homers allowed by a Yankees pitcher in their first 50 games with the team.

This is certainly not what the Yankees expected when they signed Rodon to his six-year, $162 million contract during the 2023 MLB offseason. During the season before it with the San Francisco Giants, he had an impressive 14-8 record and 2.88 ERA in 31 appearances. However, he has just not been able to replicate his All-Star form with the Yankees.

A major reason for Rodon tying Happ with this brutal franchise record has been because of this season. He has already allowed five home runs in just four starts, which currently has him tied at first in the majors with six other pitchers. Rodon will now look to get things back on track with the Yankees from here. In 50 games over three seasons with the AL East club, he has a 20-20 record and 4.80 ERA.
