Cubs beat Padres 3-1 in Wrigley Field opener

The Cubs offense was on a roll entering their first home series of the year. But on a cold day at Wrigley Field, the team had to answer whether they could continue that momentum in an environment where runs would be scarce.

In a 3-1 win against the Padres, they provided the recipe for just that.

Left-hander Shota Imanaga continued an impressive 2025 showing, limiting the Padres to one run in 7 1/3 innings. It was his second straight start of at least seven innings. The only run he allowed Friday came on Martín Maldonado’s second-inning solo basket shot.

The Cubs offense leaned on plate discipline, baserunning and small ball to score their three three runs.

After Ian Happ’s leadoff single in the first inning, the Cubs drew three straight two-out walks against Padres starter Randy Vásquez to push a run across the plate.

Then in the fifth, they scored on an infield single from Justin Turner – with Seiya Suzuki beating out the throw to second – and a fielding error by Padres third baseman Manny Machado.

Cubs relievers Porter Hodge and Ryan Pressly held the score the rest of the way, with Pressly working out of a jam to secure his third save of the year.

The Cubs beat the previously undefeated Padres 3-1 in their first game of 2025 at Wrigley Field.

The right fielder has a skill set that screams “franchise cornerstone” for, oh, how does a decade sound? But the Cubs are the Cubs, which eventually will make this the ultimate litmus test for the Ricketts regime.
