Reynaldo Lopez to 60-day IL, and Braves make another trade

Today, the Braves announced a couple of moves. Most notably, Reynaldo Lopez has been transferred to the 60-day IL with a shoulder injury. He’ll have arthroscopic surgery on the shoulder to determine the severity of the injury, but the Braves hope he’ll be able to return this season. On top of that, the Braves acquired catcher Jason Delay from the Pirates for cash considerations and outrighted Jesse Chavez to Gwinnett after he cleared waivers, but he elected free agency instead.

The Reynaldo Lopez news was expected. Even if he can return this season, this is a serious shoulder injury that’s going to cost him several months. We’ll know more about the severity of the injury in the coming days.

Hopefully, the Jason Delay signing turns out to be nothing more than organizational depth, and he never sees the light of day in Atlanta. But he does have 134 games of catching experience at the major-league level, recording a measly .610 OPS over 373 plate appearances.
