Boston Red Sox fans hoping to see All-Star designated hitter Rafael Devers on the bench won’t be thrilled with Wednesday’s lineup. Devers, who has opened the season an incredible 0-for-19 with 15 strikeouts, is hitting second against the Baltimore Orioles. Although the three-time All-Star has drawn four walks in 23 plate appearances, he’s also yet to hit a ball out of the infield.
Devers is the first player in MLB history to strike out 15 times in his first five games. On the one hand, Devers remaining in the No. 2 hole isn’t totally surprising. Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters following Monday’s loss that he had no plans on changing the lineup. “[T]he off-day is tomorrow, yeah, and [then] we’re gonna play him,” Cora said after Devers’ 0-for-3 performance Monday, according to the Red Sox’s official website. “He’s gonna hit second for us [Wednesday].
“And he will hit, no doubt about it,” Cora added. “That’s something that we all know. It’s just a matter of when.” However, it’s nonetheless interesting that Cora stuck to his guns. The Red Sox entered play Tuesday hitting just .201 with 16 runs scored as a team.
Devers told reporters Monday that he feels “good” and “comfortable” despite the ongoing slump-and, in fairness, “slump” may be too kind a word. “I know the type of hitter that I am,” Devers insisted. “I know that the hits are gonna come sooner rather than later.”
