The Kansas City Chiefs are trying to bounce back after an embarrassing defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl. Many even feared that the 40-22 loss would be the last time NFL fans got to watch Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce play football.
However, after contemplating retirement, Kelce announced that he’d be returning to play out the remainder of his contract. At the annual NFL owner’s meetings in Tampa Bay, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid revealed that Kecle informed him of his decision to return a week prior to the Super Bowl, according to Pro Football Talk.
“I just wanted him to put it out there and not me,” Reid said.
“I always like guys to step back (after the season), but he wants to come back, and he’s training like crazy, too.”
However, the brutal reality is that even though he’s returning, Kelce is on the back end of his career, and with that, Reid admitted that the future Hall of Famer may have a reduced workload next season.
“I’ll see when he comes back and see where he’s at,” Reid said. “He’s learning when to come out when he needs it. We were banged up at the (receiver) positions, so that doesn’t help a tight end’s cause at all. The healthier we can be around him, he can still be productive.”
It’ll be interesting to see what level Kelce can produce at next season, as he looks to leave his career on his own terms, as he tries his best to hold off Father Time.
Hopefully, Kelce can continue to compete at the level he and his fans have become accustomed to over the course of what has been nothing short of an illustrious career.
