The Boston Red Sox had one of the most active offseasons heading into the 2025 season. They added several reliable pitchers and one of the hottest free-agent signings in former Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman. While Bregman bolstered the offensive and defensive lineup, a rift between Rafael Devers and the front office over his future at third base created some tension.
The divide became so significant that Devers nearly requested a trade. Ultimately, the Red Sox and Devers agreed on a plan: Devers would serve as designated hitter while Bregman would take over at third base. As a result, this arrangement is set to remain in place throughout the season, even if either player misses time due to injury or rest. WEEI’s Rob Bradford reported the Red Sox’s plan to keep Devers as DH even if Bregman is unavailable. Cora said Devers wouldn’t play third if Bregman has day off. ‘He’s the DH of the Boston Red Sox.’
— Rob Bradford (@bradfo) March 28, 2025 With a mix of legitimate All-Stars and veteran leadership, the Red Sox aim to keep two of their best batters content as they look to lead a young, talented roster. On Thursday, the Red Sox began the season with a 5-2 win over the Texas Rangers. Neither Bregman nor Devers had strong performances at the plate, combining four strikeouts (three from Devers and one from Bregman), no runs, no walks, and no hits in a combined eight at-bats.
Wilyer Abreu’s two-home run, four-RBI performance carried the offense. Devers’ struggles at third base have raised concerns about his defensive reliability. The Red Sox will soon rely on Bregman and Devers to deliver at the plate to drive their offense.
