Red Sox News & Links: Sox, Kristian Campbell close to contract extension

Kristian Campbell has no use for your Opening Day deadlines! After last night’s loss to the Texas Rangers, in which Campbell hit his first big league home run, word broke that the Red Sox are “deep” into contract extension talks with the rookie. We’ve already seen Craig Breslow jump at the opportunity to sign prospects; he did it just last year when he gave Ceddanne Rafaela an eight-year deal worth $50 million. Given his pedigree as one of baseball’s elite prospects, Campbell will get more than that. Look for something closer to the eight-year, $82 million deal that Jackson Chourio signed with the Brewers. (Chris Cotillo, MassLive)

If he does sign here for a decade or more, then that means we’ll have a lot more opportunities to see him shut up certain local radio personalities. (Tim Crowley, NESN)

Campbell certainly is adjusting to big league baseball quite nicely so far, though it’s irresponsible to draw any conclusions from just three games. And thank god for that, because Rafael Devers just became the first player in MLB history to strike out 10 times in the first three games of a season. (Boston.com)

One of those strikeouts came in the ninth inning last night against Raffy’s former teammate, Chris Martin. The Sox did want Martin back and reportedly made him a generous offer, but the Texas native seemed determined to pitch closer to home. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)

Simce Martin and Alex Bregman switched states, they’ll never be able to speak Spanish together, which is something Bregman has been doing a lot in the Sox clubhouse. (Peter Abraham, Boston Globe)
