Yankees Predicted To Land $56 Million Ace In Monumental 4-Player Trade

MLB MrThanh · March 26, 2025 · Comments off

The New York Yankees desperately need to add a starting pitcher this season. They’re down three starters (Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, and Gerrit Cole) to begin the season.

New York has been linked to a plethora of potential trade targets, but there haven’t been any rumors indicating a deal was close. Still, it’s more likely than not that the Yankees will find a trade to boost the starting rotation.

Bleacher Report’s Zachary Rymer recently predicted the Yankees would swing a blockbuster trade to bring in a starter. Rymer predicted New York would land Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara in a monumental four-player trade.

“Gerrit Cole is done for the year, and Luis Gil may not be back until June,” Rymer wrote. “Given these things and how much their offense figures to miss Juan Soto, making a big trade for a proper ace may be the only way the Yankees can save their season. And unless the Padres are still open to moving Dylan Cease, Alcantara may be their only practical option.

“The 2022 NL Cy Young Award winner looks as good post-Tommy John surgery as he did before it. He’s cranked up the heat this spring, in the process pitching 12.1 scoreless innings. This is not a light package the Yankees would be giving up, but the rub is obvious: Beyond being very, very good, Alcantara’s contract is guaranteed for 2026 with a $21 million club option for 2027.”

There’s one clear issue here. Trading Will Warren for Alcántara would provide the Yankees a better pitcher, but it wouldn’t fix their concerning depth problem. New York would still be left with Marcus Stroman and Carlos Carrasco in the starting rotation.

Instead of Warren, the Yankees could send left-handed pitching prospect Brock Selvidge to the Marlins to get the deal done.

For the Marlins, this package should be more than enough to steal the former Cy Young starter from them. Miami could also ask for another young, high risk prospect if it needs a bit more to tip the scale.
