Braves Trade Proposal Sees World Series Contenders Part Ways With $73 Million All-Star

The Atlanta Braves play their first game of the regular season against the San Diego Padres on Thursday. The Braves are entering this campaign with high expectations, as they sport one of baseball’s best-looking rosters.

With the Braves anticipated to be one of the top teams in the league, it would not be surprising if they look to add to their talent even further once we get closer to the MLB trade deadline in July. However, while this is the case, one of their All-Star players has started to create a bit of buzz in the rumor mill as a potential trade candidate.

In a recent article for CBS Sports, Mike Axisa made a bold prediction for each MLB team for the 2025 season. When it came to the Braves, Axisa predicted that the NL East club will end up trading star catcher Sean Murphy.

Axisa argued that Murphy could be made expendable if Braves top prospect Drake Baldwin thrives as their starting catcher at the beginning of the year while the former is out due to injury. Baldwin certainly has the potential to make an impact, as he had 16 home runs, 88 RBIs, and a .276 batting average in 124 minor league games last season. This included 12 home runs and a .298 batting average in 72 games with Triple-A Gwinnett.

If the Braves ended up making Murphy available, he would likely generate interest from teams needing help behind the plate. The 30-year-old is a one-time All-Star and won a Gold Glove in 2021, so there is value there. However, he is also coming off a down year at the plate, posting a career-worst .193 batting average.

Nevertheless, it will be intriguing to see if Axisa’s prediction about Murphy getting dealt by the Braves comes to fruition from here.
