As spring training winds down to an end in the next few days, it is worth taking a look at how former SF Giants players have fared in exhibition play this far. Let’s look at two former Giants who have struggled and two who have been on a tear.
Of course, it is just spring training and the stats players put up either in Florida or Arizona are ultimately meaningless, but it can still give us an indication of who is hot and who is not at this point in spring. Let’s start with who is not.
2 former SF Giants failing in spring training, 2 who are dominating
Blake Snell
Giants fans will not be shy about booing Blake Snell whenever he faces the Giants over the next few years. After spending last season with San Francisco and having a dominant second half of the year after not being ready to pitch for much of the first half and injuring himself, he decided to join the dark side and sign with Los Angeles. He also recently complained that the Giants did not pursue him in free agency.
Nonetheless, Snell has not looked great in spring training thus far. In two Cactus League starts, he has a 7.71 ERA in 4 and 2/3 innings pitched. He also got roughed up a bit in one of the exhibition games the Dodgers played in Japan against the Hanshin Tigers, giving up three earned runs in 4 and 1/3 innings while striking out seven.
Snell is notorious for getting off to slow starts even when he comes into spring training healthy and ready to pitch. It would be no surprise if he started off the season poorly for the Dodgers before kicking things into gear come summertime. Of course, Giants fans would not be opposed to a year-long, or multiple-year-long, slump from Snell. Maybe if we are lucky his bad spring will carry over into the entire regular season.
Kris Bryant
The Giants only had Kris Bryant on the team for a couple months during the magical 2021 campaign. He did fairly well for the Giants and had a good NLDS against the Dodgers before signing a huge deal with the Colorado Rockies after that season.
That contract has been a disaster for Colorado as Bryant has been injured for much of it and has not been great when on the field. In spring training thus far, he has just four hits in 28 at-bats. One was for a homer and another for a double, but those still aren’t great numbers in the notoriously hitter-friendly Cactus League.
Perhaps the fact that he has remained healthy should be considered a victory for Colorado. We will have to see if 2025 is the year he finally makes his massive contract look a little bit more worth it.
Now let’s turn to two former Giants who have looked good in spring training.
Jorge Soler
The Giants signed Jorge Soler to be their slugging designated hitter last season but it did not really work out. They traded him to the Atlanta Braves at the deadline and then he was dealt to the Los Angeles Angels in the offseason.
It looks like he has found his swing in the Cactus League as he has slashed .311/.404/.622 with four home runs and 11 RBI. He also shared a sweet moment with Casey Schmitt earlier in spring. We know he has a ton of raw power, so we will have to see if he can have a bit of a bounce back season in 2025.
Joc Pederson
Yet another former Giants designated hitter who is having a hot spring is Joc Pederson of the Texas Rangers. In 34 at-bats he is slashing .265/.324/.706 with four home runs, three doubles, and 12 RBI.
Pederson spent two seasons with San Francisco, having an All-Star campaign in 2022 before falling off a bit in 2023. He signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season and had a bit of a resurgence, smashing 23 homers and hitting .275. We will have to see if he can be a reliable power threat in Bruce Bochy’s lineup this season.
So there you have it. Those are how some former Giants are faring this spring. We will have to wait and see if these trends carry over into the regular season.
