If there has been one Achilles heel for the San Francisco 49ers during the Kyle Shanahan era, it’s the fact that they have never been able to field a consistent offensive line with stars at every position. Sure, they have a future Hall-of-Famer in Trent Williams, but the team has had little consistency along the rest of the positions with the star.
And it’s a big reason why the team has played in so many big games over the years, but has failed to win the one that actually counts to people’s legacies. That could be changing this offseason, though. In a mock draft sent by Chad Reuter of NFL.com, the 49ers are predicted to draft LSU left tackle Will Campbell – arguably the top tackle and offensive lineman in this current draft class.
“Campbell’s relatively short arms (32 5/8 inches) and narrow frame (77 3/8-inch wingspan) may push him inside at the next level, but the 49ers are thrilled to see him available here to challenge for the open left guard spot,” Reuter said. “Like the Colts’ Braden Smith and others, Campbell may eventually get the chance to prove himself outside to replace Trent Williams or Colton McKivitz.”

Has it worked? Absolutely. But in an edge where defenses are faster than ever, it’s not hard to see why the 49ers’ offense got stuck in the mud plenty of times last season.
