Veteran reliever Jesse Chavez has signed a Minor League deal with the Braves, hoping to secure a bullpen spot for Opening Day after being released by the Rangers
The 41-year-old reliever signed a Minor League deal with Atlanta on Saturday, just in time for a Spring Training showdown against the Orioles.
The Braves will use this outing to decide if Chavez earns a spot on the Opening Day roster.
This isn’t new territory for Chavez. Last year, he joined the Braves late in Spring Training after being cut by the White Sox.
He then turned heads with a dominant 1.32 ERA over 26 appearances through June. However, his performance dipped in the second half, finishing with a 5.22 ERA over his final 20 outings.
Now, after being released by the Rangers on Friday, Chavez is looking to prove he still belongs.
Whether he makes the roster or not, one thing is clear—he’s not done fighting for a spot in the big leagues.
