The Dallas Cowboys already made one curious trade for a cornerback, but could another be in store?
After acquiring former Buffalo Bills first-round pick Kaiir Elam, the Cowboys could theoretically be done shopping at the position. Elam, Trevon Diggs, and DaRon Bland have high upside as a trio, though there’s injury risk and inconsistency baked in.
Elam, in particular, is the wild card. The Cowboys didn’t give up much to get him (a fifth-round pick and a seventh-rounder, with a sixth-rounder coming back), so they could easily go shopping for a slightly more proven backup/nickel corner if one becomes available.
One NFL writer believes the Kansas City Chiefs could be the ideal trade partner.
On Friday, Anthony Palacios of Last Word On Sports proposed Chiefs corner Jaylen Watson as a hypothetical trade fit for the Cowboys, coming off a strong season in which he received a 71.6 coverage grade from Pro Football Focus.
“It’s been an interesting offseason for the Dallas Cowboys, especially after trading for Kaiir Elam. However, they did this after losing Jourdan Lewis to the Jaguars,” Palacios wrote.
“Jaylen Watson might not start but it gives the cornerback unit some competition to see who could pair a tandem with DaRon Bland.”
Watson, 26, has only one interception in his career, but it was a 99-yard return for a touchdown. He also has 18 passes defended and allows a solid 59.7 percent completion rate in coverage. He is making only $3 million in 2025, the last year of his rookie contract.
The Cowboys would have to keep as many of their premium draft assets as they could, but Watson would be worth targeting, either now, or in the middle of the season if one of their cornerbacks gets hurt.
