The 2013 World Series champion is joining the San Diego Padres as the special assistant to CEO Erik Greupner, the club announced Thursday.
Peavy will assist multiple departments within the Padres’ organization and serve as an ambassador to fans and the San Diego community, per a press release from the club.
“We’re excited for Jake to rejoin the Padres after an outstanding playing career,” Greupner said in the press release. “Beyond his impressive accomplishments on the field, Jake brings a passionate, competitive spirit and leadership qualities that align perfectly with our organizational values. His wisdom, experience and relationships in the game are invaluable as we continue to pursue a World Series Championship for the City of San Diego and our fans.”
After being drafted by San Diego in 1999, Peavy spent the first half of his 15-year career with the Padres, winning the National League Cy Young Award in 2007. He became a member of the Red Sox’s rotation in 2013 after a trade with the Chicago White Sox.

“I’m incredibly appreciative of this opportunity to reunite with my Padres family,” Peavy said, per the release. “San Diego has always held a special place in my heart. I’m a Padre through and through — from the moment I was drafted by the team until this very day, and I can’t wait to work alongside this talented group and contribute in any way I can to the success of this great organization.”
Peavy posted a 4.48 ERA across 188 2/3 innings of work with the Red Sox with a 5-10 record in 30 starts. After being traded to the San Francisco Giants in July 2014, Peavy ended his career after winning his second World Series title in that same season. He is one of 10 players in Major League Baseball to win back-to-back championships with different teams.
