The New York Yankees roster was decimated by injuries in spring training with Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Giancarlo Stanton and DJ LeMahieu all going down with significant issues. As Opening Day 2025 approaches, the latest MLB rumors are shedding light on one move the club would still like to make.
New York desperately needs rotation help, especially a front-line starter. While the likes of Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcantara and San Diego Padres’ ace Dylan Cease are floating around in MLB rumors, neither are expected to be moved until the summer.

There are other potential Yankees trade targets who would fortify the starting rotation – Erick Fedde and Jordan Montgomery – but New York seems inclined to roll with Will Warren, Carlos Carrasco and Marcus Stroman. However, there’s another position on the Yankees roster that the club wants to address now.
According to Brendan Kuty of The Athletic, New York seems “especially motivated to upgrade at third base” with a specific focus on a right-handed bat to pair with Oswaldo Cabrera in a platoon.

Cabrera slashed .247/.296/.365 with a .661 OPS in 299 at-bats last season. He posted a .190/.229/.241 triple-slash line in 79 at-bats versus southpaws with a .729 OPS and .268/.320/.409 slash line in 220 at-bats against right-handed pitchers.
No specific MLB trade candidates were named, but there are a few options that could be on the Yankees’ radar. The Pittsburgh Pirates could potentially be open to trading Isiah Kiner-Falefa or New York could revisit trade talks for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. More likely, though, the Yankees will take a flier on a late castoff in a spring-training roster battle or find a potential platoon bat off waivers.
