Cubs predicted to swing blockbuster trade for $56 million Cy Young Award winner | Sporting News

The Chicago Cubs are 0-2 after being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Tokyo Series. After a disappointing 2024 season, they could look to add stars at the deadline to help ensure they make the postseason this year.

The Cubs could look to add help specifically in the starting rotation. Justin Steele and Shōta Imanaga are great top two, but they could use some more help. MLB.com’s Anthony Castrovince predicted the Cubs would acquire Miami Marlins ace Sandy Alcántara before the trade deadline.

“Though rookie third baseman Matt Shaw won’t be going anywhere, the Cubs have six other guys on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 prospects list,” wrote Castrovince. “With Kyle Tucker a pending free agent, the Cubs shouldn’t be prospect-hoarding this summer. They should be making every effort to return to October for the first time in a full season since 2018 and with a roster capable of going the distance. And nobody goes the distance better than Alcantara, a throwback capable of a 200-plus-inning campaign and these little-known, old-fashioned things called complete games.”

Alcántara won the Cy Young Award in 2022. He had a 2.28 ERA and 207 strikeouts while leading the league in complete games, six, and innings pitched, 228 2/3. He struggled in 2023 and missed all of 2024 recovering from injury. However, he is an elite pitcher with club control. He signed a five-year, $56 million extension in 2021, with a $21 million club option for 2027.

He has a 3.32 career ERA in 146 games and could lead the Cubs’ rotation into October.
