UPDATE: Star Pitcher Makes Shocking Contract Decision, Orioles Lurking

The MLB offseason is officially upon us, setting the stage for teams and players to make pivotal decisions about contract options. The Baltimore Orioles set the ball rolling on Saturday, opting not to pick up Eloy Jimenez’s $16.5 million option for 2025.

With their eyes on the free-agent market, some enticing prospects are emerging, most notably left-handers Blake Snell and Sean Manaea, who are now available for bidding.

Blake Snell’s decision to decline a one-year, $30 million deal signals his intention to secure a longer-term contract after delivering another stellar performance when fit.

Despite missing about a third of the season due to an adductor strain, Snell was dominant on the mound, showing he still has plenty left in his pitching arsenal.

Sean Manaea, on the other hand, passed on a one-year, $13.5 million option. Opinions on Manaea’s market value vary, largely stemming from his stint with the Mets this past year where he pitched to a personal best 3.47 ERA, despite his career ERA hovering at 4.10.

Both Snell and Manaea come with their set of challenges, yet their potential makes them hot commodities, ready to be snapped up quickly by teams eager to bolster their pitching lineups.

The spotlight also shines on Yankees ace Gerrit Cole, who opted out of a substantial $144 million remaining on his four-year contract with New York.

However, Cole’s opt-out is a bit of a puzzle, as it triggers the Yankees’ option to void this move and retain him by extending the deal to five years for $180 million.

The general consensus among Yankees fans is that the team won’t risk losing both Cole and Juan Soto this offseason, making Cole’s retention seem likely, albeit at a steeper price.

Meanwhile, former Reds’ righty Nick Martinez adds his name to the free-agent roster after declining his player option.

Martinez impressed with a 3.10 ERA across 142.1 innings, proving his versatility both as a starter and a swingman for Cincinnati.

Depending on how their search for a lead pitcher pans out, the Orioles might consider Martinez as a possible target.

As we edge closer to the deadline for resolving team and player options on Monday, the clock is ticking for the Orioles and others to finalize their plans.

We can anticipate more athletes entering the free-agent pool, promising an exciting few weeks as teams scramble to shape their squads for the upcoming season.
