A new MLB rumor has seemingly opened the door to the New York Mets or New York Yankees making a trade soon for the impact pitcher both teams really need.
We are just a week away from the start of the 2025 MLB season for the Mets and Yankees. Both clubs reached the playoff final four last year with the team from the Bronx getting on the doorstep of a World Series title. Unsurprisingly after an active offseason, both clubs are seen as contenders in their respective leagues.

However, the New York teams have a similar problem heading into the new season. Injuries have had huge impacts on their starting rotations. The Mets already had a shaky starting five. But now new edition Frankie Montas will miss a few months and Sean Manaea is slowly working his way back from a notable issue. The Yanks have a better staff but suffered the biggest blow with ace Gerrit Cole now out for the season due to Tommy John surgery.
Both the Mets and Yankees have been linked to potential trades for impact pitchers for weeks. But with the season so close, that seems unlikely. Well, maybe there is a chance based on an interesting new MLB rumor.
San Diego Padres scouting New York Mets and New York Yankees ahead of potential trade

Recently, Sports Illustrated Mets insider Pat Ragazzo reported that the San Diego Padres scouts have been at spring training games for eight different teams evaluating talent ahead of a potential trade. Those teams are the New York Mets and Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs and the Philadelphia Phillies.
The Pads are reportedly looking to shed payroll. And are willing to trade from an area of strength, their starting staff. Both Dylan Cease and former Yankee Michael King have been linked to both NYC clubs in previous trade rumors.
New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman recently suggested Cease is probably off-limits. Since San Diego views him as a key part of a team contending for a playoff spot in 2025. That could mean King is the player they are taking a hard look at moving soon. Both he and Cease are free agents after this season.
