Braves’ latest round of roster cuts great news for pair of bullpen arms’ chances

The Atlanta Braves finally start the 2025 regular season on March 27 against the Padres and Opening Day can not get here soon enough. However, there is still some work to do down at camp figuring out exactly who Atlanta is going to be starting the season with and who will either begin the season in the minor leagues or will be left looking for work elsewhere.

At this stage of spring training, most of the guys still in camp are highly likely to stay with the organization in some form or fashion. The Braves take a lot of pride in establishing depth at Triple-A in the event of an emergency (which can and will happen) and many of the guys that get cut over the next week or so are still likely to remain in Atlanta’s plans at some point this season.

The latest round of cuts are a great example of this as the Braves sent four players over to minor league camp, but all of them could still be called upon at some point this season.

The #Braves today reassigned LHP Jake Diekman, RHP Buck Farmer, C Curt Casali and OF Jake Marisnick to minor league camp. Atlanta now has 39 players in camp.

Braves cut 4 players from spring training roster in big boost for Daysbel Hernandez and Angel Perdomo

There isn’t any earth-shattering news here, but these cuts do clear some things up a bit on the bullpen side. While Marisnick and Casali have been seemingly destined for Gwinnett from the get go, both Jake Diekman and Buck Farmer were considered among the top contenders for the Braves’ bullpen. Atlanta will hope to stash them in the minors for a rainy day and both guys could see time early in 2025 as the Braves inevitably rotate arms in and out.

What these cuts also mean is that both Daysbel Hernandez and Angel Perdomo seem to control their own destiny in terms of making the Opening Day roster. While Anderson Pilar has struggled in Braves camp and could end up being in the next round of cuts and offered back as a Rule 5 pick, two of the arms most likely to challenge Hernandez and Perdomo are now no longer in the picture.

Could the Braves still have some surprises in store as they continue to trim their roster? Of course! There is a chance that a name that we haven’t discussed much could emerge and there is always the chance that Alex Anthopoulos goes out and adds some more help out of the bargain bin. With the regular season coming up fast, we’ll know one way or the other very soon.
