The SF Giants will play their first regular season game in just over two weeks. The team still has a few roster battles to sort out, so let’s take a look at a few recent developments that could impact who comes out on top in these battles.
SF Giants news: roster battles play out in final weeks of spring training
Brett Wisely vs. Casey Schmitt
One of the key roster battles heading into camp was between infielders Brett Wisely and Casey Schmitt for the backup middle infielder role. Thus far, both have played very well which will make manager Bob Melvin’s decision a tough one.
Schmitt has impressed as of late, and three of his nine hits this spring have been home runs which shows that he has a lot of power potential. He is also an impressive glove at second base, shortstop, and third base.
Wisely has also been a solid performer thus far, and given the fact that he is a left-handed bat he may be a better fit for a roster that does not have many left-handed infielders. He too is a solid defender and has also proven he can get on base in different ways by leading the team in bunt hits last season.
Wisely still probably has a slight edge, but this decision will not be a super easy one for Melvin.
Competition for fifth spot in the rotation
Kyle Harrison, Landen Roupp, and Hayden Birdsong are all competing for the fifth spot in the team’s starting rotation. Harrison got roughed up in his most recent outing and his velocity was down which is a concern.
Roupp was red hot to start the spring, but he faltered in his last start against the Chicago Cubs which was his first poor outing of the spring.
Birdsong looked really strong in Monday’s game, pitching three hitless innings and striking out four batters against the Colorado Rockies.
This is another competition that is close, and it is hard to tell who the favorite is at this point. These next few weeks may truly determine who gets the last spot in the rotation.
Backup catcher
Tom Murphy’s injury opened up the competition for the team’s backup catcher role. Sam Huff and Max Stassi are competing for that spot, and as of right now Huff is the favorite thanks to his solid plate appearances and the fact that he is out of minor league options.
Stassi has looked good too and is probably superior defensively. He also hit a go-ahead home run in Tuesday’s game against the Athletics. However, Huff seems like the better options as of right now.
These roster battles all have intrigue, so it will be interesting to see how they play out in these last few weeks of spring training.
