The Boston Red Sox had a very successful offseason this winter. They brought in starting pitchers Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler to bring some talent and depth to a rotation that lacked it in 2024. But these two additions might not be enough for the Red Sox. Boston has seen three injuries to starting pitchers this offseason and it’s leaving the team in a very vulnerable spot.
Kutter Crawford and Brayon Bello aren’t going to be ready to begin the year. Recently, the Red Sox announced veteran Lucas Giolito would begin the season on the injured list with a strained hamstring. The Red Sox have Quinn Preister and Richard Fitts to fill in, but that might not be enough. Boston could explore a blockbuster trade to replace its injured pitchers. If the Red Sox are going to chase a trade, they might as well chase the biggest arm on the market.
Miami Marlins starting pitcher Sandy Alcántara was the best pitcher on the planet. After suffering a torn UCL and missing the entire 2024 season, the righty is back on the bump and his arm looks as electric as ever. It’s only a matter of time before Miami ships him off in a trade. The Red Sox would likely need to headline a trade for Alcántara with either Triston Casas or Wilyer Abreu. Behind the headliner, Boston could throw in multiple top 10 prospects in order to steal the ace from Miami.
Alcántara has the chance to be one of the best pitchers in the league when healthy. He’s on a team-friendly contract for the next three years. It would be a huge addition for Boston, not just right now, but for the next three seasons.
