San Francisco 49ers fans had mixed reactions after the team signed quarterback Mac Jones to serve as Brock Purdy’s backup. The news, first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, confirmed that Jones agreed to a two-year, $7 million contract with $5 million guaranteed and a maximum value of $11.5 million.
Bleacher Report shared the update on X, prompting a wave of responses from fans. Some were excited about the signing, while others questioned the move. “Well, this is going to be interesting,” one fan commented. “Great signing, man,” another wrote. However, some were skeptical about Jones joining the team, especially considering his recent struggles.

“This man about to have the best seat in the house for every game,” another quipped, referring to Jones’ expected role as a backup. Others saw potential in the move, believing that 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan could help Jones revive his career. “Mac Jones is betting on himself in San Francisco, hoping Kyle Shanahan can bring out the best in him. Solid backup move for the 49ers,” one fan wrote. “Purdy and Jones 2QB sets gonna go CRAZY,” another expressed excitement.
Jones, a former first-round pick, was closely linked to the 49ers leading up to the 2021 NFL Draft. Per AP News, the 49ers had traded three first-round picks to move up to the No. 3 overall spot, where they ultimately selected Trey Lance over Jones. Lance, however, struggled with injuries and system adjustments, leading the team to trade him to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. Meanwhile, Jones started strong with the New England Patriots, leading them to the playoffs as a rookie but saw his performance decline after offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels left.
He was benched in 2023 and later traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he started seven games, throwing eight touchdowns and eight interceptions.
The 49ers were in need of a reliable backup after Joshua Dobbs left in free agency to join the Patriots and with Brandon Allen also hitting free agency, Jones became their choice. With Brock Purdy firmly established as the starter, Jones now has an opportunity to reset his career in a stable system. Whether he’ll be able to turn things around remains to be seen, but one thing is sure-the 49ers’ fanbase will be watching closely.
