Another year, another injury for Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story. The Red Sox scratched Story from their lineup Tuesday with mild upper back tightness. However, Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he expects Story to play Wednesday against the Minnesota Twins.
Either way, any Story injury-even those optimistically described as “mild”-is always concerning. The two-time All-Star has played only 163 games since signing a six-year, $140 million contract before the 2022 season. Story missed nearly the entire season with a dislocated shoulder. It’s been a rough few years for a shortstop who played at least 140 games in four of his five full Colorado Rockies seasons; Story also played 59 of 60 games during the shortened 2020 season.
“[G]uess this means he’ll play his usual 11 games,” one X user wrote, calling Story an “under the radar all time suck signing.” “He should be back by August,” another sarcastically added.
It’s understandably hard for Red Sox fans to trust Story, who has hit just .232 with a .693 OPS in Boston. Several fans responded with the infamous GIF of Heath Ledger’s Joker saying, “And here we go.” “Trevor Glass….,” read one comment.
Former Houston Astros All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman could start at shortstop if Story’s back injury is more than “mild.” Others suggested the team start top prospect Marcelo Mayer. “Just bring up Marcelo already and let him develop in the big leagues!!!!” one commenter wrote. “Story needs to throw the fries in the bag already!!”
